Clinical Information

Cysticercosis Antibody (IgG), ELISA, CSF-Cysticercosis is a tissue infection with larval  (cysticercus) cysts of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium in which the patient serves as an intermediate host for the parasite. The most common manifestation is neurocysticercosis which occurs when the larvae invade the central nervous system, often presenting as seizures, or chronic meningitis. Antibodies directed against other parasitic infections, particularly echinococcosis, may cross-react in the cysticercus IgG ELISA. Confirmation of positive cysticercus ELISA result s by IgG antibody western blot is recommended.

Reference Values

Reference Range: <0.75

Interpretive Criteria:

<0.75 Antibody Not Detected

≥0.75 Antibody Detected

Diagnosis of central nervous system infections can be accomplished by demonstrating the presence of intrathecally-produced specific antibody. Interpretation of results may be complicated by low antibody levels found in CSF, passive transfer of antibody from blood, and contamination via bloody taps. Antibodies to other parasitic infections, particularly echinococcosis, may crossreact in the cysticercus IgG ELISA. Confirmation of positive ELISA results by the cysticercus IgG antibody Western blot is thus recommended.
