Draw blood in a green-top (sodium heparin) tube(s). Plasma gel tube is not acceptable. Spin down and send 1 mL of sodium heparin plasma refrigerated in a plastic vial.

 

Serum

Draw blood in a plain red-top tube(s). Serum gel tube is not acceptable. Spin down and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated in a plastic vial.

O-Demethylencainide (ODE):

Reference Range: 100 - 300 ng/mL

 

3-Methoxy-ODE (MODE):

Reference Range: 60 - 300 ng/mL

 

10% of patients do not form therapeutic concentrations of the active metabolites, ODE and MODE. In these patients the recommended range for the encainide concentration is 300 - 1200 ng/mL.
