Testing Algorithm

When this test is ordered, the reflex tests may be performed and charged. All fungal organisms submitted will be identified and billed as appropriate.

Method Name

Fungi are identified using macroscopic and microscopic morphology, nucleic acid hybridization probes, D2 rDNA gene sequencing, real-time polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR), or MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Dimorphic pathogen identification is confirmed using molecular methods (ie, nucleic acid hybridization probe, D2 rDNA gene sequencing, rtPCR or MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry).

(PCR is utilized pursuant to a license agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.)

Reporting Name

Culture Referred for ID, Fungus

Specimen Type

Varies

Specimen Type: Organism in pure culture

Container/Tube:

Preferred: Sabouraud dextrose agar slant

Acceptable: Inhibitory mold agar slant

Specimen Volume: Isolated mold or yeast

Collection Instructions:

1. Organism must be in pure culture, actively growing. Do not submit mixed cultures.

2. Place specimen in a large infectious container (Supply T146) and label as an etiologic agent/infectious substance, if appropriate.

Additional Information:

1. Specimen source is required.

2. Isolate description is required: Gram stain reaction, morphology, tests performed

3. See Infectious Specimen Shipping Guidelines in Special Instructions for shipping information.

Forms: If not ordering electronically, complete, print, and send a Microbiology Test Request Form (T244) with the specimen (http://www.mayomedicallaboratories.com/it-mmfiles/microbiology_test_request_form.pdf).

Specimen Minimum Volume

NA

Specimen Stability Information

Specimen Type Temperature Time

Clinical Information

Organisms are referred for identification or to confirm an identification made elsewhere. This may provide helpful information regarding the significance of the organism, its role in the disease process, and its possible origin.

Reference Values

Not applicable

Cautions

If the organism is received in mixed culture or contaminated, the report may be delayed or identification may not be possible.

Day(s) Performed

Monday through Saturday; Varies

Report Available

2 to 35 days: If organism is received in mixed culture or is contaminated, report may be delayed.

Performing Laboratory

Mayo Medical Laboratories in Rochester

Test Classification

This test uses a standard method. Its performance characteristics were determined by Mayo Clinic in a manner consistent with CLIA requirements.
